Cinetorial | Cruella De Vil

Last year I dressed up as Trinity from the Matrix and the year before that I was Amélie Poulin. This year, however, I opted for something different– a villain.

Cruella de Vil, aka the most stylish villain, was probably my very first fashion icon and she is also responsible for my love of fashion. Or at least, having watched the film as a kid, she made me realize and even become aware that I love fashion.

I remember watching the live action version of 101 Dalmatians starring Glenn Close as Cruella de Vil when I was a teenager. I felt so inspired by all the coats and fashion on the film, that I immediately started drawing my own designs inspired by her.

Don’t get me wrong: I didn’t empathize with her role in any way, since I couldn’t even conceive anyone wanting to harm puppies. However, I ended making a portfolio full of illustrations of designs inspired by her style consisting of  faux fur trimmed coats, jackets, and skirts.

While I don’t have the portfolio anymore (a girl from my school in a higher grade asked me to gift it to her, so I did), that was my first experience bringing me close to fashion. It made me realize how much I love design in all of its forms.

Rumour has it, Emma Stone will be portraying Cruella in a new Disney film with the same name that will be released in 2021. I am really looking forward to watch it, especially the fashion.

What about you? What’s your favorite fashion movie character?

Happy Halloween! x
