Do you ever wonder how to wear mules? Well, me too. Mules can be quite tricky to style, since they can make your legs look quite unflattering if paired with certain kinds of bottoms. A couple of weeks back, I styled these gorgeous (and super comfy!) 3.1 Phillip Lim mules with a wrap midi skirt layered over a mesh dress. But guess what? The mules in combination with that wrap skirt with a front opening made my legs look totally weird and disproportionate with the rest of my body.

How good mules look styled with a skirt, pants, dresses, jumpsuits, or culottes, mostly depends on the shape of your leg, the heel, its height,  whether they are stilettos or block heels.

For example, block heeled mules work best with:

Avoid pairing them with:

On the other hand, stiletto heeled mules balance out edgier and baggier outfits such as jumpsuits and boyfriend jeans and gives them a femenine touch. Mules create the illusion of a longer leg due to the lack of ankle straps, but too much exposed skin can look tacky. Mules with dainty heels look awesome with:

Avoid pairing them with:

How about flat mules, you might ask? Well, flat mules look good with everything. Or at least I can’t think of anything they wouldn’t look good with.

After a process of trial-and-error, I know now how to wear these minimalistic 3.1 Phillip Lim mules this season: With cropped trousers+midi coats, midi skirts, culottes, and skinny jeans.

Wishing you all a lovely Sunday. x
